Abstract

Over the years, the terms used to identify intellectual disability, which was previously known as “mental retardation,” have changed. This has been due to the heavy stigma associated with bearing its label (Tassé & Mehling, in press). This article examines defining and determining intellectual disability (intellectual developmental disorder). The focus is on the Diagnostic Criteria in DSM-5. Diagnostic features, associated features supporting the diagnosis, and prevalence are discussed.
